दामोदर विनायक सावरकर की गिनती देश के महान स्वतन्त्रता सेनानियों में की जाती है। वह बड़े साहसी और वीर थे। उन्होंने देश की आजादी की लड़ाई में बढ़ चढ़ कर भाग लिया। अनेक कष्ट सहे। यातनाएँ झेली। कालेपानी की काल कोठरी में भी रहे। फिर भी , कभी अपने मार्ग से डिगे नहीं, झुके नहीं। उनमें देश भक्ति कूट कूटकर भरी थी। उनकी वीरता, निर्भीकता और साहस से प्रभावित होकर देश के लोगों ने उन्हें "वीर" की उपाधि प्रदान की। वह वीर सावरकर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुए।
